Harvest Blessings Farm

I (Brenda) grew up in south central Wisconsin on a dairy farm where my mom and grandmother canned every summer; the traditional things like, green beans, pickled beets, and frozen corn. My grandfather taught me about the land. I watched him grow strawberries and red popcorn, two of my favorite things as a kid, and still are ;-) He taught me how to graft fruit trees but little did I know that I would someday want to do it, should have paid closer attention. My family always had a sustainable garden and my job usually was weeding, although, I do remember planting potatoes with my dad, but weeding seemed endless. I always got the job of weeding between the carrots, beets, and onions and I hated it because it was so tedious. I know find it therapeutic.

Those experiences imprinted something in my soul. Since then I have had some kind of a garden, whether a container garden on a patio deck 2 stories up or a small 6’ x 6’ plot I turned with a shovel in the backyard of our townhome and planted all the same things we had in our garden as a kid. Talk about square foot gardening. I have also made it a thing of mine that I experiment with something I have never grown before each year. This year it is several things; quinoa, garbanzo beans, and lentils are the main ones but I’m also attempting pinto, cranberry, and Jacobs cattle beans, cucumbers inside, and different squashes.

I have found great therapy and healing in the many gardens over the years. God has shown me a great many things about His character and how relying on Him for sustenance through planting, weeding, and harvesting. Oh, how God showed up and overwhelmed me one fall when I was pulling carrots out of the ground. How something so small can turn into something so perfectly formed with bright color and so sweet. Tears came to my eyes. For the past 10 years I have planted the garden and when the planting is finished I walk around the whole garden numerous times praying over all the seeds and plants and soil. I ask God to breathe life into the seeds and reign blessings on those who eat the fruits. This is in part why we have started Harvest Blessings Farm, so that others may experience life change through growing fruits and vegetables, being connected to the earth as God made Adam. My hope is to give others the same opportunity to experience God’s work firsthand and my desire is that through your CSA experience you too will have a better understanding of HIS character.

"I (Eli) like gardening because I like planting the seeds and riding the tractor. I like playing with the dirt, worms, toads, and froggies. I like digging in the dirt for worms."

Even when he was only 15 months old he loved worms.

He even knew that fresh peas were yummy.

 Playing with his pet toad.

The latest - he can fall asleep anywhere!
